This book felt like a popcorn movie equivalent among fantasy novels. It has a detailed magical system, and apparently a larger mythology that it is part of, but it really does feel like a time killer. If you're looking for fun or interesting characters fighting for freedom against a tyrannical overlord with no deeper meaning, it's a good book. But it falls far short of real literary greatness. No real lasting impact, no staying power, nothing to really move the reader in any way.

My wife and I couldn't make it through the first episode, the writing was that bad. This in spite of it having a lot of things that I would really enjoy: Fantasy setting, Arthurian legend, gorgeous forest locale. But then they throw it all away in the first minutes of the show with supremely unlikable characters, awful info dumps with no context, immediate teen drama, etc. Dumpster fire show, avoid at all costs.
