Eh. I grew up with the original Sharkboy and Lavagirl (along with the Spy Kids movies). This has almost no connection to the original. Yeah Taylor Dooley's there as Lavagirl, as well as a rando filling in for Taylor Lautner as Sharkboy. But that's it.
No mentions of Max, or the Ice Princess, Linus/Minus, Mr. Electric.... all the components that made up the original are missing.
The movie makes attempts to make it more relevant to 2020 but it really falls flat in that regard anyway - it ends up being cringey.
The best way I can describe this movie is its like if you took Spy Kids and mashed it with Sky High, and made it worse. Yeah it's a cliche Kids movie - predictable, cheesy, for, well, kids. But as a sequel to Sharkboy and Lavagirl - no thanks.
I'm curious to know if anyone's Kids actually liked the movie. I'd be surprised if they did, honestly.
I didn't go into watching this movie with any high hopes. I was a little excited to see what the movie would be like but even with low expectations it fell even shorter. We Can Be Heroes? It's a no from me.
Go watch Spy Kids or the original SB&LG with your kids. :)
