NO SPOILERS Extremely well written book on the HMS Wager, and it’s running into rocks and eventual sinking off the uninhabitable island of the same name off the coast of South America. Grann has plumbed the archives as he tells the story from various perspectives, particularly from the Captain, David Cheap, and the leader of the mutinous faction led by gunner John Bulkeley.
In his retelling of this extraordinary tale of the human condition under the most extreme conditions, Grann also provides much of the socioeconomic context surrounding the events leading up to and following in the years 1742 to roughly 1745. Highly recommended for fans of adventure and shipwrecks in general.
