A prelude to a truly remarkable body of work, Playboi Carti takes minimalistic trap music to its logical conclusion.
It’s not to pimp a butterfly, but if you’ve decided to listen to a record by someone called ‘Playboi Carti’ expecting something that resembles a political statement I’m not sure what to tell you.
In fact “Playboi Carti” is the antithesis of To Pimp A Butterfly, and that’s a good thing. It’s the hip hop equivalent of punk rock, it makes a point but the point is one that feel’s nihilistic in a way.
Maybe I’m looking into this album too much and it’s a pretentious view but at the end of the day I’ll be listening to this album far more eminently than anything that claims to make a political statement.
Five stars.
