Steve Carrell does a fantastic job of playing the parent of an addict. His subtle approach to the scenes may make him look like he is not getting the job done. But what he is actually doing is portraying the soul fatiguing emotion that parents who are truly going through this feel. This ever present sense of being there in the physical but being somewhere else in the mental. The inability to fully grasp why you got here and the hopelessness of not being able to figure out how to fix it. The interaction between the ex's is also spot on, their attempt to talk and yet rapidly spiraling into the blaming and not being able to figure out how to maneuver this new relationship. To his vacillating between being mad at his son, but not wanting the new wife to be angry too. They do a great job of portraying how this disease does not just affect the addict but the whole family. And finally a huge congratulation to the young man playing the son. He did his research. Overall a gut wrenching, reality based presentation of the downward spiral of addiction and the climb out of the enabling pit. Thank you for showing the world our story.
