A wonderful series, and, according to my many friends in France who lived through that era, historically accurate.. Every character is realistic, neither black nor white, compromised, making decisions day to day on how to stay alive, protect themselves and their families while maintaining some self-respect. Thoroughly enjoyable, well written and produced.
I lived in a similar French village in eastern France for 8 weeks a few years after World War II, near Montbeliard, and recognized characters in the fictional villlage of Villeneuve as characters I knew in my village: the doctor, the policeman, the priest, the merchant, the teacher, real people who had to make real choices under terrible stress. Yet some found the courage to resist and to clandestinely hide downed Allied pilots and push them over the border into nearby Switzerland.
