A masterpiece. No seriously, I believe it's a modern masterpiece for kids television. The plot lines, the villains, the character dynamics, the jokes, the pacing, and even the animation are all easily above par. It takes place before the events of the Madagascar movies, and the way season 5 wraps up all the plots and transitions into where the beginning of Madagascar 1 took place is pretty genius and very satisfying. The cast of characters is remarkable and diverse. Everyone is so unique, providing a different perspective and dynamic, making interactions feel so fresh. The voice acting is terrific. It has the perfect blend of seriousness and silliness in the writing. Besides the absurdity and childishness, there is a lot of political satire and educational points, and the stories are crafted well. It's the kind of show that doesn't take itself seriously but is still confident. You can imagine the creators are in the studio just having a good time while writing and recording. I'd also like to mention that the show is just plain weird, but that is what makes it so great. Its weirdness is embraced, and characters in the show demonstrate that. There is a lemur with a disfigured face, a dwarf lemur, an obese lemur, and a very flamboyant male lemur, among others, and they are all treated the same. Every character is weird in their own way, but serious judgment is never shown unless actual harm is being done, with tight wholesome friendships and respect for each other for who they are, which can really be a lesson for everyone.
The only downsides were that the jokes would sometimes be too obscene or over the top, and "All Hail King Julien Exiled" which was an unofficial season 4 and a half where the series took on a continuous 13 episode plot that felt dragged. I believe single episode plots suit the show's style a lot better and all 5 seasons of the main series delivered. Overall, the most entertaining show I have watched. Never a dull moment and never a bad episode. Definitely give it a watch if you're a fan of Madagascar, Dreamworks, or if you even remotely like the genre.
