I am a life long Star Trek fan. I have read many of the books, seen every episode of every series (even the animated series) multiple times, and can quote many episodes line for line.
Yes there have been duds, but one thing that they had going for them was a clear and cohesive timeline. Discovery has thrown that away. If you can ignore that part, then sure, its not bad, and yes I still watch it, because it is the only new star trek on TV at the moment. But it is not really Star Trek. The best episodes have always been Morality Plays. Think, In a Pale Moonlight from DS9, one of the finest episodes made. That entire episode deals with one character and his grapple with right vs wrong, and the ends justify the means. Discovery is an action show, nothing more.
