A cheap attempt at trying to create an emotional impact without investing in characters. All Flanagan tropes that are usually worked into his stories artfully were just randomly strewn about - felt like someone watched Flanagan's previous work (Including the amazing Haunting of the Hill House) and tried to copy it. Individual backstories that don't tie into the plot, arcs that begin and end abruptly and unsatisfactorily, lack of clarity on who the leads even are. Didn't know I was supposed to be rooting for this one love story until it was put into words in the finale. Very disappointing. Had a hard time finishing it to be honest, but I guess everyone's allowed a few mistakes.
