According to my pensive musings of Chabrol's Story of Women, I feel that the domestic tragedy portrayed in this heart rending movie, has straightforwardly spotlighted man's malicious desires to procreate for eventually destroying its own creation, which is a hapless victim of social and political degradation, whose insidious influence continually endangers and extinguishes the survival of its apprehensive populace, despite vehement societal condemnation.
In other words, liberation of unborn babies from the oppressive fetters of the Vichy regime, was a boon rather than a bane for the deprived and depressed French populace, which was consequentially coerced to take the desperate recourse of abortion, in order to mitigate the excruciating suffering of potential neonates.
Hence, Marie Latour should have been accused and sentenced for adultery instead of carrying out abortions, for the unbearable catastrophe of circumstances compelled Latour and other women alike to prefer foeticide, as a disgruntled population immersed in abject poverty and appaling misery, will forever be prompted to encourage, appreciate and commit suicide.
