I grew up with this show and it'll always have a special place in my heart. If I hadn't watched it, I would've most certainly not become who I am right now. The first 3 seasons were amazing. Season 4 and 5 were ok too, but when Stephen Hillenburg, the original creator left (RIP) the show turned into a fat pile of garbage. In the later seasons there were a lot of horrendous episodes, for instance: The Spliner, Ink Lemonade, One Coarse Meal, Big Sister Sam, SpongeBob You're Fired, etc. If you want to watch the show, I recommend you checking out some of the old episodes, preferably from season 1-3. Here are some of the best episodes (IMO): Band Geeks, Wet Painters, Chocolate with Nuts, The Camping Episode, Culture Shock, F.U.N., and the Krusty Krab Training Video.
