I've played plenty of games that simulate the age of wooden ships and iron men - from the Avalon Hill board game of that name, through all versions of "Age of Sail", "Man of War II; chains of command", and now, Naval Action. Though not without its flaws, this last one is the best by far. Accurate sailing model, really good graphics, and overall fun gameplay, once you get past the steep learning curve (which is a major time investment, but the payoff is well worth it). Caveats: 1. good experience can really depend on if you can find a group of people you can get along with to play as a team. You can have fun as a loner, but it's harder to do. 2. superships border on being too dominant. People who get a hold of these super ships can have an unfair advantage. On the other hand, battles at sea rarely consisted of fair contests - one side was always at a seemingly unfair advantage - get used to being frustrated and defeated. Out of space now - great game!
