Overall: 5 star
Art, music, animation: 5
Story: 4 or 4.5
It is an amazing movie, especially as a first hand-drawn animation with no industry to back you up. A tough and difficult project which I can vouch for as an art student myself. Keep in mind that for a smooth hand-drawn animation it takes 60 frames per second.
So, 1hr 38 mins = 98 mins i.e. 5880 seconds
1 second = 60 frames
5880 x 60 = 352 800 frames in total
A tough job which was spectacularly done!
The art style, colour scheme, animation and transitions were amazing. The colouring and shading and the light work was just next level! It was all very beautiful, an eye candy. The wars scenes, the glass sculptures, the interior of the glass workshop, the architecture, character sketch, the bazzars and the beach. Excellent work done! It was all really really emotive and expressive, done by true artists!
As an art student I could pick some minute nuances such as side profiles alignment, inconsistency in Alize's character sketch, there was a frame where Alize had 4-hinges when a human face has 3. There was one frame of 0.5 second which wasn't shaded as the other frames. These are all for the constructive criticism, but doesn't denounce the fantastic job Mano Studio had done regardless. I have no words to explain how emotive the scenes and backgrounds were. Absolutely great!
Music was another amazing aspect! The violin captured my heart instantly! I am not a musician, but if a music touches my heart and draws me in then it's an heartouching.
The script is where I cut that one star. I got the impression that the script was longer, but cut short. The scenes transition were good but it didn't necessarily pushed the story forward. Some times it relied on stereotypical views to push the story such as the argument between Vincent and Alize, and the involvement of magical jin. I felt that the world that was build didn't really go along, and stood out. Some dialogue and actions such as Alize buring the violin and calling herself a product of war felt misplaced and demanded mote context. Similarly for labeling Thomas and Vincent as pacifist and the discrimination it caused. I almost didn't realised the ending of Alize, until well a friend cleared it to me. And well the first scene of Thomas, and the last scene has a slight plothole which would've been an easy fix by reversing/mirroring the frame. One thing I really liked about the story was that it never mentioned where the town is, not it overtly claimed to be in Pakistan. It's a fusion which very Ghibli Studio. Kudos for that!
These are just nitty gritty stuff honestly, like the movie is a good 4.5 star, and the fixing of these small things would have earned it a solid 5. So, this is basically me pinpointing the things as a writer and an artist. Even the best of animes and stories have plothole and inconsistencies, so that's okay.
Thank you Mano Studio for having this dream and bringing it to life! Ten years work was very visible!
Pakistan is not the hub for artists, but you made it through! We can all agree that Pakistan is not on board with time, when it comes to storys, dramas, animations, cartoon, films, movies and cinema. So, from this aspect I give you the last 1 star. It's a total 5 from me.
