Reading this book you soon understand the author’s confirmation bias guided his every move. In the forward he even admits (!) he decided the Shroud was a hoax within minutes of seeing it! He also writes like a standard Protestant observer of quaint Catholic pieties … then later promoted himself to “atheist”. After deciding it was a man made artefact, he then expertly placed it in the history of art - about 1300 AD. A conclusion based on an assumption carries no weight. He seems to think that because the arms and hands are placed across the groin, it must be a posed artwork - yet the body may have been placed in this way in the tomb. He says the carbon dating in the 1980s should have “laid the matter to rest” but doesn’t engage with the evidence that that process was tainted by bad samples - very possible given later repairs to the shroud. Finally, this book cannot deal with the recent news from Italy of scientific dating of the shroud to about 50AD… This book is a tardy attempt at debunking that exposes itself on every page.
