Capt. Michael Burke Miller

Loved this hidden gem. It reminded me a bit of One Hundred Years of Solitude. I first saw it when it came out on video in the ‘80’s. I really enjoyed the part when they built the ice plant in the jungle, and the table conversations on the ship while enroute to their new home.

Outstanding drama with well researched historical characters such as James Angleton and the Cambridge Five spies in the UK.

This appears to be a relatively well researched, historically accurate film. My father sailed as a deck officer on merchant vessels throughout the war and the film corresponds well with the stories and pictures he had. The burial at sea, survivors left behind, and high casualties scenes I found particularly moving. It took some time to perfect the new technologies of RADAR and SONAR, but by late ‘43 and with enigma code broken, German submarine duty was very dangerous.

Great film with outstanding performance by Gary Oldman. The shifting points of view and flood of Characters had me constantly trying to figure out who is important. For me it was a bit like watching an exorcism, in that I know at lease one Character is the devil. I love all of the films from Hollywood’s golden age, with the film shot in Black and White, it certainly had that feel.
