This book is presented as the true story of the last two years of McCandless’ life. That statement is far from truthful. In McClandless’ journal he wrote 430 words. Krakauer expanded upon and created entire narratives to make his character sympathetic and interesting. McCandless on page 105 in his journal simply wrote “Caribou” Krakauer expands this to “I saw a caribou but did not get a shot off.” And this isn’t the only time Krakauer had difficulties with the truth. Krakauer reports weather conditions that do not match NOAA records for that area. Krakauer was told by a professor from the university of anchorage that he left several of the books in the magic bus that Krakauer claims Chris packed in with him. Krakauer claims Chris wrote in his journal that he was injured and couldn’t hike out yet the autopsy didn’t show signs of an injury that would have prevented this.
Read this if you like, but know that the story once Chris gets out of the pick up and heads down the Stampede Trail is a complete work of fiction with little to no basis in fact or reality and if that part is completely made up how much of the rest of the story is a complete fabrication.
It’s is a work of fiction based upon a real life
