The Prom was not everything I had wanted it to be. While including a handful of genuinely touching moments, overall it felt inauthentic. Like the writer was someone who has never met a gay person, or attended a high school, quite frankly.
Meryl Streep's performance was everything you expect of the silver-screen behemoth. Even working with the shoddy script and shallow plot.
This movie had a real opportunity to show some growth and character development. But it never meaningfully addressed any conflicts. Reductive and uninspired. I guarantee that the only reason it takes over 2 hours to get through is because each star wanted their own solo.
I honestly wanted to like this movie. As a musical fan, I was expecting a lot more from this talented cast. But even they couldn't outweigh bad writing.
