I have to agree with others here... the first word that comes to mind is BORING... First book I ever read by this author and the last. The sleeve on the book makes it sound like a great read, the reviews in the back by other authors too, but I don't know what book they read, definitely not this one!
I admit I am a picky reader, I am accustomed to Jeffery Deaver, Dan Brown, Michael Connelly but I give others a try, this was a bust.
I love books about Ireland, read plenty of Maeve Binchy and loved them, but this did not read like Irish speak, it was totally off even for US speech, very weird.
The characters were boring and not engaging, the story had no surprises aside a small one mid book, it dragged forever but it could have been told in 1/3 of the book, the rest is just filler descriptions of mountain, birds and senseless stuff. It puts me to sleep when I wasn't even tired! I managed to finish it by skipping large portions and just reading the dialogs, to see if it went anywhere...it didn't.
It was advertised as a mystery thriller but it failed miserably, it had a soporific effect at best, so maybe a Lullaby genre?
It tried to touch on different subjects here and there, like rural life, poor people struggles, cop life in the US and family issues, gay marriage but nothing in depth so it just felt disconnected.
The only good part was the funny bits, there was a bit of humor here and there that actually made me chuckle... but that's it.
Unfortunately I would not recommend this to anyone aside an insomniac.
