The Little Mermaid

Firstly I loved the series because it explored the connection between race and class in England. Bridgerton is a rosy picture of love and romance where the races/social classes intermingle. However, we know that Britain during the time period in which Bridgerton is set was NOTHING like that. It also explores gender and how women were treated second to their husbands. I loved Charlotte’s strength and even how Agatha called her out on not representing her social class as the first black queen. It’s raw with a lot of uncomfortable but honest scenes. However, I do think that they could have showed more of the love story between Charlotte and George throughout their lifetime. They had 15 kids together but the series seemed to focus on his mental illness. I guess there is only so much you can do during 6 episodes. However, when we have black shoes with black leads, it’s okay to add some positive points. Other than the Mozart scene, no one focused on Charlotte’s accomplishments. Like how her house is the official Buckingham palace of England, her introducing the Christmas tree and carrying a country while her husband suffered from a mental illness. There was just so much they could have done to make it more positive and focus on Charlotte’s character but I guess most people want a love story. Loved this though. If there, is a spin off, I would like them to focus on the accomplishments of this couple.

Definitely a good movie! I wish there was more of a focus on Elvis the man than his relationship with his manager but Austin did an amazing job portraying young Elvis!! He must have studied him so well! I loved that they payed homage to the Black influence of Elvis’s music!! True history represented and no tiptoeing around the issues of the time! Definitely recommend this film especially to the younger generation who are yet to know Elvis Presley!

SPOILER: Okay so there were definitely some interesting plots in this story. However, I got really confused when they switched the story from being in Song to Wei. It truly seemed like the characters changed their personalities so I didn’t know if it was the same characters continuing the previous plot or an entirely new story. Definitely should have been a smoother transition other than the story teller in the middle. Also, I didn’t buy the romance of the main leads until the end. Maybe the plot took so long to get to their romance or there were too few romantic scenes with them to believe they liked one another but the title does suit the romance well “untouchable lovers”. They truly didn’t touch or talk to each other alot for their romance to be believable. They didn’t even kiss, only a few stolen forehead kisses. I actually believed Huo Xuan and Gu Huan’s romeo and Juliet romance. It was short lived but believable and sweet. I think that Rhong zhi had more chemistry with Huo Xuan and Ma Xueyan but for some reason we had to believe he loved the princess no matter how bad he treated and lied to her. I also did not like the switch in personality of the princess from the first portion of the story to the second. In the beginning she was calm and smart but then she turned slightly immature and spoiled in the second portion where it became hard to relate to her. Also, there were a few tasteless comments in the film about being darker being “ugly” etc or bad comments about women and I know this is based on old China but the script writers definitely should consider that everyone who watches these series isn’t from their culture and may not get the bad humor. Honestly, all the characters had their good and bad sides. Overall, the plot wasn’t bad. It was slightly confusing but for a series based on “love”; there definitely wasn’t a lot caught on camera.

Royal Feast

This is the first drama where I truly did not like the male lead. He was selfish and had too many faces to know who he really is. I’m so sorry for the main female lead for getting into a toxic environment with this man. I was truly scared for her. Other than the relationship issues, I think the drama was decent with plenty of betrayal and backstabbing but it’s definitely not a good romance drama.

Now this show surprised me. It started off as a romantic love triangle with a background story of political struggle and war. There was so much character development and you really did not know who to root for or who the bad characters were because each character had their pros and cons. I think this was a good representation of how people change and dreams & goals can corrupt people. It also shows people struggling to be loved and give love during difficult times. So if you want a soapy love story, don’t watch it, it isn’t that type of story. However, if you are looking for a realistic story of power and struggle during times of war then definitely give it a watch!
