Wow, this was terrible ... this feels like the screenwriters created a by-the-numbers love story that parallels the original (but with far less interesting characters), and then sought to bring back every lovable character from the original for 30-60 seconds at a time.
Gratuitous barbershop scenes collide with completely unnecessary scenes with McDowell, the odious preacher, and Sexual Chocolate.
There's an awful and nonsensical origin story for the forgettable prince Lavelle Junson (played without much joy by Jermaine Fowler), and Akeem has spun around 180 degrees away from the likable and heroic character he played the original.
You can see the eventual outcome of Meeka’s story arc coming from a mile away, and a lot of superficial and insulting "girl power" scenes.
The only redeeming quality was the costume design.
