Critics venerate this movie mainly because of Redford's twinkly performance and his funning with Sissy Spacek, which is in fact pleasantly humorous though it consists of only about one tenth of the film. Gratefully these two at least are understandable unlike the lesser actors who are barely, if at all, understandable in this meandering and somewhat foolish endeavor.
