I was looking forward to the series; the period of Catherine the Great is a very interesting one, with significance to history. Unfortunately this series does nothing, not little, nothing to portray this period.
The lack of historical insights begins from the initial moments of the first episode by starting after an important event, the coup. An event that is pivotal to Catherine’s reign. What lead to the coup and how it was realized are important events.
The writers and producers insults the viewers with their misogynous portrayal of Catherine. The writing portrays Catherine as more focused on feeding a sexual appetite than leading a country. Catherine’s reign was an important and successful period in Russian history.
The writing is boring, focusing on silly sexual scenes rather than interesting historical facts, intrigue and opportunities for interesting creativity.
Often this more of a soap; very disappointing from HBO, who appear to have lost their way since Game of Thrones. Questioning the value of paying for HBO.
