For me, it's just a 3/3.5 rating. I've been a big fan of The Color Purple, the original movie. I'd watch it every 12-16 months as it's one of my all-time faves. I knew this was a musical -- I love a good musical, but this movie could have been more impressive. It could be that I'm too familiar with the original and know quite a few lines from various characters.
To me, a great movie is one where I'm captivated -- I'm on the edge of my seat trying to figure it out -- and at the end, I leave the theater saying, "That was a great movie...I'd go and see it again."
This new version was good but could have been better. Perhaps they should've let it be. A continuation of the story would have been a better angle. For this one, I could've waited until it moved to Netflix.
I understand it took $100M to make the movie, and to be profitable, they need to pull at least $200M, which I'm sure will happen. It's not Oscar-worthy, though.
