Some westerns are made to be westerns. Some westerns are made to bend the rules and transcend what a western should be. Others are just movies set in the Wild West. For me, this was all of them at the same time. Although there will be people who inevitably mock this film for the (questionable) acting seen therein, I actually quite enjoyed it. It was easy going and had despite some other reviews suggest, good dialogue which is stoic and straight to the point. Clint Eastwood might have found this movie lacking a certain pernash, but have enjoyed it for its straightforward, no nonsense talk and simple but old fashioned themes. It is a film that is what a western really should be. In fact, it’s actually what spaghetti westerns have always been. Minus the nostalgia and the Leone soundtracks and you have a solid and firm western.
