30 year old man here. I know this show isn’t made specifically for me, and it’s probably not a surprise to a lot of people that an adult wouldn’t like this show. But personally, I enjoy “kid’s” cartoons and cartoons aimed at a younger audience. And I know I’m not alone, so I feel that shows like Total Dramarama are not exempt from criticism.
When the original Total Drama shows came out, (they are also very bad, in my opinion) I was in high school. I didn’t really watch anything on CN at the time, so Total Dramarama doesn’t strike up any “nostalgia” for me. And to be honest, I can’t find anything in this show that is even remotely like-able. Which makes me feel like it only exists because of the nostalgia of a certain group of people. Which I understand. Nostalgia can be very influential when it comes to people’s opinion on things. I get it. I’m sure I’m that way about things. It’s natural for us to look back on our younger years favorably, but sometimes nostalgia is a little too influential, border-line blinding. (Especially in 2020, I feel like)
Every character in Total Dramarama is annoying and unbelievably stereotypical. Every single “joke” or moment that’s supposed to be “funny” consistently will bring an eye roll or a groan out of me.
And like I said before, I like kids shows, I like kids humor, this is simply poor and lazy writing.
When Total Dramarama first came out, Cartoon Network routinely played some of the older Total Drama shows, so I got to see what they were about. (They were just as bad) Just like in the original Total Drama series, there is a character named Owen (same guy, just a toddler this time) and his entire existence in the show revolves around fat jokes and eating jokes. Like after all these years of the Total Drama franchise existing, Owen is the exact same. A walking, farting fat joke. And that’s it.
There’s another character named Gwen and she is the.... “goth girl”?? I guess you would call her? All of the attempts at making her “dark” and “that girl who says spooky things and wears black” just don’t really hit for me. It seems so forced, like the writers have never met a goth in their life haha. Underneath their bad characters, there is a little bit of depth. With Gwen in particular, she acts like she is dark but in reality she plays with little ponies like every other girl. (Eye-roll)
This show is riddled with cringe. For example one of the characters shouts this from on top of a castle “well, looks like I’m the king of the castle, and you’re the dirty rascal!”
...............what?!??!
Was that some kind of sly DMB reference for all the “90s kids” watching? WHO IS THIS SHOW MADE FOR???
And the answer is, NOT ME.
the soundtrack really sucks too.
IN CLOSING: I enjoy shows that are aimed at kids. For example, Craig Of The Creek. Another current show on Cartoon Network. This show is great, I love all of the characters, the setting of the show is really fun, and the writing is very good and pretty funny. Everything has its flaws, but I love Craig Of The Creek. With multiple previous shows in the Total Drama franchise, you would think that the creators would have had time to somewhat develop these characters like... even in the slightest, but no. the characters remain just as bland, predictable, un-funny, and cliche as always.
