Oh my where to start...
Firstly, as with many unsuccessful films of the modern era, this movie falls into the trap of over promoting concepts like "individuality, self awareness, and identity." The problem here is that the theme of this movie is about war, specifically independence from an oppressive empire. The theme of this movie and its concepts have no relevance with each other. War is about "bravery, sacrifice, morality, etc..." These concepts are completely overshadowed by the prior. The result is a forceful, confusing, unrelatable cluster.
Secondly, a successful franchise depends on developing a universe and then proceeding to tell a meaningful story within the confines of that universe. In this movie there are too many "out of the box" moments. (Star ship ramming) Too many discontinuities! For any long time fan it's a slap in the face because if anything is possible than nothing is truly meaningful.
To just highlight a few flaws with the film. As a movie that stands by itself, probably ok. As a movie that's part of a historic franchise, it's like a donut that you dropped on a airport carpet. So much goodness needlessly thrown away...
