As a woman who grew up in the early 2000s, barbie has a soft spot in my heart, and frankly i had very high expectations for this movie. it's safe to say that this film met said expectations -- to a limit.
the film is truly enchanting and a breeze to watch through. the first act in my opinion was incredible, there are no words to describe how i felt watching it. perfection. although, it is the second act that begins to throw people off.
in said second act, themes of feminism and gender equality are introduced. the 'barbie world' is a satire of the real world, where the barbies rule and the ken's feel hidden in the shadow. arguments were made that the portrayal of ken isn't sufficient, but the fact is, it is the truth, and people wish to hide from it.
without stating any spoilers i can tell you this much, the film was impeccable. if you choose to look at the film with more metaphorical, deeper meanings, the story's true moral will be released. of course, people expected this film to be light hearted, as it is in the first act, but barbie in itself is character that only appears as fun and breezy on the exterior, hiding a more deeper meaning.
with that said, the only reason why i give this film a 4 star, is due to the fact that many decisions that could've made this film oscar worthy were left out. but then again, it depends on what perspective you look at it with. and who knows, maybe this film will win an oscar 🤫
