The hate that this movie is getting is so goofy. There are worse written movies that have been applauded (Saltburn.) I think a lot of these people just don't get it? Further, if you didn't know it was a musical that's on you for not watching a trailer because it was made pretty clear that it was. It was thoroughly entertaining, no bit of it had me bored. There was clearly some real effort put into it. Phoenix can't sing but that's not the point. His acting and Gaga's acting both had the chops. Their chemistry was so good. A lot of interesting shots. Focus on telling the story of Arthur's inner psyche and loneliness is maintained. Everything here could have been translated onto a play stage, and I love that, it suits the story. I love this movie and I expected, because of the reviews, that I would hate it. Maybe it's only understandable for people who are genuinely lonely or feel crazy. I would actually give it 4 stars but because of the unfair reviews from people who clearly did not watch the trailers before they watched the movie, I have to give 5!
