Better than it gets credited for. Nothing groundbreaking but the story stays small and is ultimately pretty literal in its horror soaked metaphor. Marvels use of metaphors isn't new too the mutant genre and so it seems consistent with the source material. The characters aren’t complex but I feel too much backstory would convolute the story arc. The action is sparse, at times dynamic as well as mediocre at other moments. One character/fan favorite in particular gets a decent sequence of “bad-assery“. I didn’t find the action to be “B movie” bad or boring. I actually found myself thinking I’d watch it again sooner than later. I guess ultimately this movie stays humble in its odd but novel attempt to fuse two genres. Not every movie can achieve multiverse levels of quantum plot twists. Could they have fleshed out the antagonists a bit more? Perhaps this was just a tease for future films. Its sad to think this is the end of an era of the X-men saga told onscreen. Hopefully those story’s will find a bigger home within Disney/Marvels movie machine...
