It's a quick (2 day) read. Given the amount of literature on the topic of not being taken for a racial stereotype, it's got some nuance. I particularly liked the chapter where his brother ends up responsible for a tragedy because of a years-long series of circumstances that converge in a generalized catastrophe. That to me was the most universal of experiences in the book. An impressive first novel.

This is a terrific read IF you go after it methodically. I flagged the start of each continuing narrative with Post-It notes in one of 4 colors depending on which of the 4 versions of Archie's life was being told. This clever, compelling book offers a deep satisfaction upon completion. It's a short story, novella, novel and epic all in one binding.
