I’m not giving 1 star because it’s a musical, I’m giving 1 star because.. what was the first movie made for?
Spoilers ahead:
The premise of the first movie is basically “villians aren’t born but made”, the ending of Joker 2 is basically like “just kidding, some are just psychos and any point we made before can be dismissed”.
This movie isn’t about Joker. This is a movie about the man who inspired Joker, so why did I watch part 1? I feel like people who like this movie or are giving it good reviews are in the story of “king’s new clothes” because in this case, the king is naked. Or like me, they are trying to gaslight themselves that they got worth their money.
The idea that a shared delusion could be a musical- fine. But the first one wasn’t for a reason: if any time something deep happened Arthur would break into song without any plot development made in the song, Joker 1 wouldn’t have been a hit.
While Lady Gaga is amazing, this is just not the movie she’s supposed to be in. The entire movie is a Joker themed underutilized Lady Gaga music video not having any of Gaga’s original touch or meaning. The Joker movie - or Arthur movie, to be clear - is not even Arthur’s, it’s mostly Gaga. Lee is the only one getting plot development that would matter in the later movies in the universe (like Suicide Squad, now we know Harley is dating a fake Joker because the real one wasn’t Joker enough), we already knew Arthur was mentally fucked in various ways so people saying “wow, we see all the ways he’s twisted, so deep” - didn’t we already know that in the first movie? We don’t learn anything new about Arthur that we didn’t know from the first movie. This+song scenes just illustrated what we already knew. The ones saying it has any depth didn’t know what NPD is so they didn’t catch his mindset from the first movie. This clearly isn’t a movie about him.
Also no change of scenery: all in prison/asylum, in Arthur’s head or courtroom until the end.
Also a random r*pe scene? Like.. is the point of the movie that you can r*pe the Joker out of Joker?
+ This movie made in 2024, starring LADY GAGA, THE FEMINIST ICON.. doesn’t pass the Bechdel test. How did that happen? If we already had Harley get plot developement might as well try and pass the Bechdel test, no?
I’m not a critic nor trying to join the hate train, this was my anniversary date and I was actually trying to get how and why this could’ve happened.. I understand reasons why people like it and I still think these aren’t good enough reasons to make up for the lack of plot and an unsatisfying ending diminishing what the first movie stood for.
