Matilda the Movie is possibly one of the best-ever transitions from stage to screen, although very different from the Broadway show.
It's a very dark adaptation with parents and schoolmaster who are pure evil, unlike their somewhat cartoonish portrayals on stage! More than just the bad guys, these three make the Wicked Witch of the West, by comparison, seem like the Easter Bunny in Candyland. (I would urge a bit of caution to parents before young kids see this movie.)
That aside, this Matilda is worthy of several Academy Award nominations: superb cinematography, fabulous costumes, sets, glorious sound & orchestration, direction, terrific chorus of kids and soloists, in particular Matilda herself for Best Actress. Won't win Best Picture, but worthy of a nod.
