I like it a lot. That said I’m not the teenager I used to be, so the cannonicity of the plot didn’t upset me as much as I imagined it would have if I was 15, I would have railed in disgust at the aesthetic changes alone never mind the grittier human elements when compared to all previous instalments.
As with all reboots and continuations of fabled sci fi favourites the great fan filter applies. It seems some fans are so zealous and dogmatic that they would be happier with ever persistent retellings of the same story rather than allow studios and writers to show us something new. In the case of Star Trek this is particularly ironic given the themes of exploration and discovery.
Whilst Star Trek discovery does have the same old themes and plot devices as all the other series it has added some brave and refreshing aspects to the universe. Profanity, gender fluidity, same sex relationships are given the normalcy they deserve and the violence and consequences are realistic but never glorified. The CGI and sound are the series greatest asset as well as the styling and world building. Any one who remembers DS9 will remember the same old explosions of a Klingon ship and a Klingon being blown into space, there is none of that here. All space scenes are fresh and new each time.
The plot is linear and follows through from the previous episode allowing you to become invested in a larger story arc and character development similar to DS9 and elements of enterprise. The characters evolve as the story moves along which is great to see.
All in all I felt privladged to watch this and I was glad it was green lit.
