Scorsese has accomplished much in a career of elite accomplishments, among them his ability in the Irishman to draw from Pesci a restrained and understated performance that puts the actor in a whole new light, illustrating his ability to depart from his typical and effortless portrayals of the hair-trigger mobster with anger issues. Part of this achievement includes the ability by both actor and director to sustain this measured performance throughout the movie, over hours of real time and decades of movie time. Bravo.
