Brilliant and mesmerizing. The playwright, Jez Butterworth, may very well become known as one of the greatest playwrights of this generation. He wrote another fantastic play that I loved a few years back, The Ferryman. And this follow-up is simply a wonder to behold.
It unfolds to tell the multiple stories of sibling love and rivalry, the struggles of being a single parent, class, ambition, and years of battles against a patriarchal world. Sam Mendes direction is flawless. Many of the cast came over from the Olivier Award winning production in London and the performances - by everyone - are honest and real and truly giving to the audience. Laura Donnelly is simply beyond in her portrayal of BOTH the Mom (Veronica) and one of her daughters (young Joan).
The play’s opening night is Sept 29th and it runs for just 12 weeks. Do yourselves a favor and make your plans and buy your tickets now. I went online at midnight after seeing the show and bought tix to see it again in November with my wife and her Mom.
Tip of the day: Pick up a free listening device at the theater even if you aren’t hard of hearing. It helps tremendously. Especially with the Irish dialect.
