I never rewatch things. Stumbled on this and decided to have it on in the background. Sucked me in again as I was at one of his shows. So - I saw this live & online. Online was of course not as amazing as the show & energy of his storytelling- but still very good. He’s truly a gifted story teller. One of the best. He can take you from laughter to deep reflection within seconds. I’ve never seen a style like that before. I don’t know how much people who are not minorities can appreciate it but at the same time anyone who’s friends with a minority gets to see life from another lens. Can’t rave enough about this show!

For mindless, uninspired viewing that distracts you from the pandemic- this is a decent show. But the character herself is annoying. Things fall into her lap so easily that it’s insulting to think this was written for an adult audience. All of that aside- it’s a positive, upbeat show that does allow you to escape a little without getting totally sucked in & neglecting the rest of your life. You’ll likely have no trouble stepping away from the chipper, “know it all” Emily.

This was a surprisingly interesting movie, well written & acted. My issue is with the larger problem of films depicting Muslims as likable only when they have assimilated & abandoned their religious practices. The terrorist line was humorous, but further played on harmful stereotypes, therefore a cheap laugh. Spielberg is a co-producer along with Oprah. I hope that they also invest in screenplays that don’t require Muslims to deny their beautiful & sacred beliefs in order to be seen as protagonists.

An opportunity lost. The film was surprisingly captivating but for the wrong reasons. It started strong. But I kept waiting for the back story on Ruben. We never get it. And so the gravity of his hearing loss is not palpable. He’s a good actor. All of the cast members are. But there were major gaps in character development. I don’t think he deserved an Oscar nomination because the story failed to tell us who Ruben was. The actor did the best he could with the underdeveloped character he played. Disappointed.

Watched this movie with my girls a couple of times now (girls are different ages from 9-17) and we haven’t tired of the story. The mother is my favorite character. She’s a fantastic actress who somehow manages to make a histrionic, self centered character lovable. Would have liked more background on the male lead (name?) but the movie flows well & keeps the viewer locked in. Not a huge fan of Ricci but she doesn’t hurt the film. The music was nostalgic & the settings were interesting. I don’t rewatch movies often. This is one that I’ll come back to- in part because of the music that moves the story along well.

Watched with my 16 & 9 year old twins. We all loved the film. Though, the younger ones struggled with the flipping between past & present. But they got the gist & we will rewatch it when available. It’s a beautiful journey through the lives of these women, with complex characters & relationships that are well acted. Truly refreshing to see how this story truly remains timeless in 2020. Highly recommend!!
