This is the first review I've ever made for a film, but it annoyed me so much that I have to do it.
Obviously there's spoilers.
I'd like to say first that the representation of this film was wonderful, the animation itself was brilliant and the songs (not all of them) were good too. (I also do think Camilo is kinda fine lol)
But the whole time I was watching the movie, I was waiting for the big moment where it got good, and nothing happened.
There was no big crash, no twist, no moment of realisation.
And, the idea that it was all solved with a HUG? It's a film for anyone under the age of ten, let's be realistic.
The main problem for me was that there was no huge "We're screwed" moment. Everything went smoothly, and yes, there was the thing with everyone losing their powers (BRIEFLY). And Mirabel feeling left out because she didn't get a door, which... Why? That doesn't even make sense. And why would they leave her out of the family photo when the dad and uncle dont have powers? And when the mother is constantly telling her she's enough. That doesn't make sense, unless their all terrible people.
And the characters were so shallow and had such little progression. And there was no huge conflict, and there was no place to sympathise with any character.
And why wasn't Abuela more concerned about the candle blowing out? And how does she still have powers after, and the house too?
And the "Massive problem" ended in about 10 minutes. For me it just felt like an eight year old wrote it, with no sense of how to plan a movie with a good storyline. It was so predicable and the conflict was poor
And its nominated for an OSCAR? It's barely a three out of ten, and that's only because of the animation, and that fact that "We don't talk about Bruno" is still stuck in my head.
Honestly, the whole movie was just
massively underwhelming.
