This is easily one of the best sci-fi horror films if not, the best, of a generation. Amber Midthunder is a captivating lead while her co-star, Coco the Carolina dog, (was not even a properly trained movie dog) but adopted for the film (her ancestors are from the breed that indigenous people populated North America with) gives quite a unique level of authenticity, energy and call to adventure. The cinematographer should be nominated or out right win an Oscar for this film, the score should also be nominated or win outright, the set design was minimal as it used the natural beauty of the American northwest to create a one of kind feature. The costume design both of the Comanche people, as well as, the French trappers was top notch, again Oscar worthy, not to mention this is definitely the coolest looking Predator out of the Franchise. There is something really special about this film that makes it more than a horror film but less of a proper period piece given its sci-fi. Nothing quite captures the feeling of this movie having not only an indigenous lead but a young woman as well, literally walk against the crowd (callback to when she decides to go for it on her own midway through the 1st act) but to have this lead in a year of unprecedented turmoil from right wing fascism really gives such a breath of fresh air to cinema. This film was beyond my expectations as it captured the feel from The Revenant (2015) with the natural settings (the bear was unexpected but a worthy adversary) but also, captured the heroic stoicism of (Schwarzenegger ) in the original film especially with the third act showdown. This film gave an interesting multidimensional perspective of Comanche peoples daily life whilst telling an interesting story about a young woman chasing greatness. For me the Predator was second fiddle to Midthunder and her journey to become a Hunter. It was a dual of the greats and her quickness allowed her to outsmart a giant. 10/10 this is the best in the entire Predator/Aliens Franchise since the original Alien and Predator films. I hope it opens the doors to its own sequel and possibly more historical periods where people face down the Predators.
