Nice special effects, little action, and less charisma. Not for kids and not for newbies. Made for the former fanbase; assumes a lot of trivia as a given that you know them all. Hard to connect with unless you recall minor details from there, know the backstories, and are adept on the Harry Potter lore. No extra scene after end credits.
Fight scenes are minimal and retain a mix of physical attacks and of fantasy via using wands plus their long-range colorful spell attacks, but that's it! Too quick and short!
Though the movie had an arresting intro with that sudden declaration between the 2 characters who appear at the first 10 minutes, their momentum is wasted after that cutscene. Can be boring because there's too much dialogue! Too much info on some things and too less info on others is the reason why it may not work quite as nicely as it could if you are a die-hard fan.
The plot's timeline in the movie is from way way back in history away from the Harry's timeline when he came to Hogwarts. Costumes were lovely, if that's a relief, and their acting excellent for both sides of protagonists and antagonists. The emotions were indeed honest on their faces, the portrayal true to character.
If you know nothing about the HP wizardry world and its history that's mentioned in passing from Book 1 onwards, you may need some refreshing and joggling of your memory. You can start from Harry Potter's classes, textbooks, and the trading cards that mentioned wizards from the past.
The movie was like watching foreign history while not knowing certain trivias enough to relate to it. Even when you learn real history, it is rare to remember trivia unless it speaks personally to you.
Maybe if the movie had put captions underneath everytime a character appeared and a brief description, it could work to help newbies, but without the extra info that's assumed to be a given, the movie may not be as entertaining as its predecessors in the same wizardry world.
It's very easy to get lost in this film if you don't pay attention. I finished reading all the Harry Potter books & watched all 7 movies when they were released. Following that, I also saw one movie of the Fantastic Beasts prior to this one, and yet the personal connection is still something that either requires a stellar memory or a fantastic attachment of a die-hard fan.
The one in his 60's fell asleep. But the younger generation behind me were noisy at the cinema with their side comments because they were fans. They'd easily recognize the snitch, the wand, the names, the music introducing the cameos, and that world.
If you know nothing of the wizardry world, please do read on the trivias at least before watching this movie. It would help you follow along should you choose to watch it.
Just don't expect a lot of action. It was heavy with dialogues and very much a battle of wits. And if you came hoping there's some romance, you have representation for at least two preferences openly that may or may not be suitable for kids.
If you came for laughs, then there's not much either. There's one memorable comedy moment in the operations. The rest of the plot were dark or heavy in tone.
