Right off the bat, I went into this movie blind. I had no idea what this movie was about, "is it a creature film? is it a psychological horror film? is it a post apocalyptic film?" I had no idea at all and also I have not seen the trailers as well unlike most of the audiences which were blinded by false marketing of this film. I was on a horror movie marathon and I just randomly picked up this flick.
And I enjoyed the hell out of this film. I fell in love with it, with how its directed, acted and shot. The movie is not about any creature (maybe)or any paranormal horror, its just a tale of two families trying to survive a post apocalyptic world for which they are willing to do anything. Both of the families can go to any limit to protect themselves. The world has been engulfed by some sort of mysterious pathogen probably a virus, our lead characters do not know much about the disease or the virus. Much of the danger is kept quite ambiguous. You, as an audience, do not know much about the danger lurking on the family, so that creates a sense of uncertainty and paranoia.
The acting here is just jarring and so surreal, its actually jaw dropping and feels really disturbing at times, everybody is just great in this film.
I think much of the hate towards this film by the audience is because of the false trailers which suggested a different premise for the film. People should go watch movies without any kind of expectations, they would probably enjoy more.
In my opinion its the best horror movie I have watched in a long time. This movie keeps you theorizing it. It leaves you thinking, which is an element of great classics like THE THING, THE SHINING etc.
This movie is a must watch.
Edit: I just watched it a second time and I absolutely loved it. This is a genuinely terrifying film and it needs to be experienced by everyone, especially horror junkies (as I am too). I would like to put my opinion here that when movies like THE SHINING and THE THING were released back then, they were not received well, neither by the people nor by the critics, but now everyone praises them and call them the great classics which shaped horror genre. The point is, people need to understand that this is not a bad film. Jump scares every second is not true horror, true horror is when a movie's creepiness lingers over you long after watching it, its the feeling of terror you feel when you put yourself in the place of the characters, its the presence of the unknown and unseen that is truly terrifying. These are somethings that audiences need to understand before talking bad about a film. And if you still do not like it, then no problem everyone has a different taste.
Also, DON'T WATCH A MOVIE WITH ANY EXPECTATIONS, it will probably ruin your experience, no matter how great of a film it is.
