"I do not stand by... In the presence of evil!" - Alita
Me and my wife stumbled upon Alita because there was no other notable movie to watch during the time we decided to check the cinema. It was a totally spontaneous moment as we did not even bother to check what's showing in cinemas before we left home. I looked at rotten tomatoes (60% rating) and had doubts, but I told myself that this is more of a bonding moment and that in itself would be worth it regardless of the movie's quality.
Oh boy, was I wrong on all levels. I was blown away and was holding my breath the entire time. 2 hours seem to have gone so fast and I was left looking for more. All I can say is that the rotten tomatoes review rating does not do this movie justice. And how many people like me would have walked away, missing this magnificent visual feast, just because we thought it sucked according to ratings found on the net? I would have missed it if there was another more popular action film showing during the time. Thank God there wasn't! And this is exactly why I decided to write this review. This is actually my first ever movie review and I hope this would remove lingering doubts to those who haven't watched the movie yet. You will definitely get your money's worth, and more! The visuals are the best I have ever seen, and the action scenes are just breath taking. Even though I am a manga/anime fan, I was actually unfamiliar of Alita's source material but that didn't stop me from appreciating the depth of her character, which I somehow compare to my favorite character Naruto. The trait to never give up no matter the odds, fearless and determined, and the innate ability to change and touch other people's hearts without even trying. That is one heck of a character. And her conviction (see opening quote above, which she says in one of the scenes - one of my favorite moments in the movie) reminds me of Himura Kenshin, my second favorite character.
Visually this is the best there is out there, no contest. Story wise, maybe it could use more polishing but who's to say there is a better way of putting together all those manga content in just 2 hours of screen time? Overall I give this movie 9/10. A must watch!
