Disney finally got it right. This was a great movie overall! I thought the changes from the original movie were all good and made it funnier, with more heart, and maybe provided more explanation. It built on an already great story. Jasmine’s character was transformed into something admirable with some female empowerment—at least she got to do something rather than just wait around for Aladdin. Will Smith as the genie had a different feel but was still entertaining and fun to watch. Some of the musical numbers were just okay—not better than the original, but certainly not horrible. Friend Like Me lacked some of the charm and humor of the original movie—but was still a good number. Jasmine was maybe the standout singer of the group and her solo song was compelling. I don’t really have any complaints. Was it better than the original? I don’t think it can be. Was it worth the watch? Definitely, and I will probably buy the movie when it comes out on DVD. I think it’s the best live action to date.
