This is one of the best films I’ve ever seen; I really cannot understand the lukewarm professional reviews it’s received. I’m pleased to see that the audience reviews are much more positive. The quality of acting from all of the cast - but especially Andra Day, Glenn Close, and Mo’Nique - is exceptional and the whole take on the traditional exorcism-style movie is truly original. This film doesn’t go for cheap thrills but spends some time building the characters so that you fully appreciate both the literal and metaphorical exorcism of evil that is about to take place. I found the ending genuinely very moving. I really cannot recommend this film highly enough.
