I read the book a couple of years ago. It is based on the true story of the writer’s family. They WERE an amazingly lucky family— everyone survived the war although no one was left unscathed by either the Germans or the Russians. I am always leery of watching a movie if I liked the book. Usually the screen writers ruin the story when they move it off the page. I almost gave up early in the first episode when the family gathers for Passover and says “chag sameach” — a modern Hebrew expression not in general use until well after the war. Too many Israelis involved in this production. Israelis don’t speak Yiddish, which Jews spoke in Poland and in the camps. But aside from that, it is an accurate depiction. And the actors truly capture the characters as I envisioned them when reading the book
