I did not see the Extremely Wicked... title represented in this movie. The movie failed to adequately deliver the stories of the victims, remembered from older viewers. This movie's main focus was on the trial and on the life that Ted Bundy and Elizabeth Kloepfer, (known as Kendall in the movie) had together, along with her young daughter. It was told through Elizabeth's eyes.
The couple met at a bar and there was no hesitation on Elizabeth's part to take Ted home, sleeping under the same roof with her daughter. As many have stated in previous discussions and reviews, Ted Bundy was a charming, handsome, and charismatic gentleman. A man whom you would take home to meet the parents.
The movie is far from the 1989 movie entitled, The Deliberate Stranger, which allowed the audience to view a subtle disturbing young man in relations to his girlfriends, even his mother. This movie's focus was directed towards a charming young man who gained the trust of his victims without much effort, luring them to their death. It appeared through this movie that his charm was very influential on those with low self-esteem and the need to feel loved.
We see through the eyes of his girlfriend Elizabeth the struggles and heartaches that she endured throughout Bundy's highly televised trial. A trial that she became obsessed with along with the indulgence of alcohol. Yet, she refused to be by his side but would anxiously await his calls then hang up after a few seconds.
We then discovered towards the end of the movie that Elizabeth was the person who notified the police after seeing a sketch that resembled Ted. Although the police stated that the color of the car did not match the description, she still left Ted's name with the authorities. She carried this guilt around for years, which eventually led her to play the role of a victim. Then asking Ted to release her feelings of guilt shortly before his execution.
In closing, although she laid the past to rest, became sober again, and attended the execution, the ending led me to assume that there would always be a shred of doubt in Elizabeth's mind as to Ted's guilty verdict. For the question that she asked and will always remain, “Why didn't this psychotic killer kill me or my daughter?” And with the question that was never answered by Ted, Elizabeth may never come to terms with the truth; hence, she only portrayed the charming side of him in this movie.
