I feel awful reviewing this as an English person but I am a huge fan of Dumas and all the Musketeer stories. The first being the best. Much like Ridley Scott's 'Napoleon' the costumes and settings were fantastic. The acting mostly was good (I'm a sucker for Cassel also) but they have decimated the original story. I understand why, to a degree as they had to weave in the religious problems going on at the time but D'Artagnan is nothing like his character in the book. Each Musketeer actually fails to come across as any kind of distinct character but blur into one. I was hoping that being produced by his home country that Duma's fantastic story would have been treated better but I guess, just like Hollywood they are appealing to an audience who don't like distinct characters but just want action. I love Eva Green but I don't think she was right for Milady and the dumbing down of Richelieu was a real shame. Both together make such an amazingly villainous combination. Gutted is the word. If you want period drama, superficial action then this is for you. If you love the original story please look away.
