‘Songs Of A Lost World’ is a terribly long overdue album from a band I’ve followed since I was 15, which is a few years ago now, I can tell you. The first CD I bought was Ponography!
I write this review having watched the recent BBC shows the band did for radio 6 and radio 2 in concert also. Where they played several tracks from the album and whilst also listening to the last track on this album ‘Endsong’ - which is my favourite and is a truly superb piece of work - and is reminiscent of their best tracks from their older albums. Which most tracks from this album do. So I believe only genuine older Cure fans will click with this album.
For me the band’s highlight commercial period in terms of album work, was during the years of Kiss me, Disintegration and Wish, and I only truly warmed to a few tracks from subsequent albums, since. But boy have they pulled it together to create this work of art.
I’m not a fan of every single track, but overall this album is up there with one of their best.
A truly deep album that very few ‘true musicians’ could achieve today. The depth of talent is raw and mature, and you have to be in the game a while to create an album like this one. The words, the dark and lighter themes, and of course their deep and proficient music!!
The Cure have played a big part in my life haven seen them live several times, where I have their entire back catalogue, and it’s such a crying shame that it won’t go on forever!! But they were there, in the first place, and for genuine Cure fans - that’s what matters.
