The movie lacked the novel's depth and suspense. Costume designs were woefully misguided as I get dirtier gardening in my own backyard then these characters living and wandering through the swamp did. Kya's father's old army sack was crisp and new looking when he gave it to her and was just as new 5 years later. The two male leads were physically very similar and nothing was done to age their appearances (e.g. longer hair, weight gain, facial hair) to denote 5 years had gone by. These and other visual flaws marred the film's authenticity...There were also several key elements in the novel that were important to the characters' development and the story overall that the screenplay omitted. Because of this I wonder how the reviews of those who read the book and those who didn't compare...For me, it was satifying but I expected more.
