I love animated movies, but I am afraid that Encanto was something like a disappointment. I watched it with my sister to see what all the fuss is about- and while it was good, it definitely didn't live up to the standards. SPOILERS AHEAD:
First off, Bruno. The mysterious uncle who sees futures and prophecies? Sounds super cool, good stuff for the movie. BUT he was living IN THE HOUSE WALLS. Why so much fuss about Bruno if he's always literally been there? I was expecting something a bit more dramatic- like how he shows Mirabel the path to bringing the magic back and the things she'll face on the way, once Mirabel travels through literal mountains in order to search for her long gone, estranged uncle. But nope, she just climbs into the house walls through a painting. So yeah, disappointment no. 1.
Secondly, the powers. How do they work? I get the candle, and the flame that apparently strengthens them, but how do they come back once the house is fixed again? And if the candle was so important, then why is it that the Madrigals were okay without it? First, the movie says that as long as the candle's flame burns, they'll have powers. But apparently, they'll have powers anyway as long as they are together?!? That's disappointment no. 2.
That's all, really. Those 2 things make the whole plot. The whole plot had a LOT OF POTENTIAL, but it seemed like that potential was shot thrice in the heart to give an extremely washed out version of what this movie could have been. They could've shown us Mirabel climbing mountains, fighting her battles, with her strange, outcast uncle by her side but nope- in the movie, everything takes place in the house.
Anyways, it's an okay movie if you're bored, but don't start watching expecting something as iconic as The Minions, or Angry Birds.
