I have always been a fan of the original Beetlejuice. It was funny, witty and sometimes borderline creepy. Michael Keaton brought an unsettling energy that pushed the movie into instant classic territory.
Fast forward 38 years later. Beetlejuice beetlejuice is released. I was super excited. I ordered the tickets online weeks in advance. I made it a whole event with the family. We were all excited!
Then it started…..
First of all Michael Keaton, sorry if you see this…sucked as Beetlejuice. He reminded me of an old homeless guy who’s had a rough life and decides to try acting for a movie. Low energy and enthusiasm. Must have left the “it” factor on the set of the first movie. I can’t believe they couldn’t notice this during filming. He sounds borderline drunk or hungover when speaking.
I hope you like the series Wednesday on Netflix because that’s what it felt like I was watching most of the time. Granted Jenny Ortega is a star and brings some good and much needed energy to the film but am I watching Beetlejuice or a Netflix series?
Lastly, the plot. I felt like they took 3 movie plots and jammed them all into 1 movie. Storyline is all over the place. Other scenes just lasted too long. For example when beetlejuice is trying to get married at the end. That was the most painful, awkward filmmaking I’ve ever seen. They must have been like how can we make this movie last 5 more minutes?
The best part about the film? The collectible popcorn container and cup! The popcorn container is made out of metal and you can choose your topper for the cup!! Save your time and watch at home on streaming. It will probably be there in a few weeks!
